We’ll take your smelly, old sneakers

You are registered for the Litchfield Hills Road Race. You’ve trained for the 7 + mile race, ready to conquer the infamous Gallows Lane, a steep quarter-mile long hill at the 6-mile mark that threatens to sap your strength.

You go to pick up your number and your free T-shirt. The crowds are beginning to gather on the green – the tailgaters are staking out their territory and you see it…the big bin of sneakers, most of which have seen a mile or two.

It’s jam-packed with old sneakers.  All sizes, brands and degree of life left are present.  Everyone’s old faithfuls and not so faithfuls; the old ripped up Nikes to fairly shiny new Brooks are staring at you. Lawn mowing sneakers streaked with grass stains and trail shoes caked with mud are in there too from kid’s size to pro basketball size!;

Did someone have a major closet purge? Or are you supposed to run the race in bare feet?

Then you see Litchfield Bancorp’s Green Begins @ Home Sneaker Collection Team.

Litchfield Bancorp has had a long tradition of supporting the Litchfield Hills Road Race since its inception in 1977, always believing that with each step we take together, it’s the community that counts.  Since 2011, Litchfield Bancorp has partnered with the annual Litchfield Hills Road Race to collect worn-out athletic shoes that are recycled into material used for athletic and playground surfaces.

So whether you are running the race or joining the hundreds of spectators who come out to watch it, bring along your retired sneakers. We’ll take them off your hands and put them to good use.  Just look for our clearly marked donation bins under our tent on the green next to the food tent.

The hundreds of sneakers we’ve collected during the annual race is part of our Green Begins @ Home program, a series of events focusing on recycling through our “Community Counts” programming.

Beyond gathering old sweaty, dirty, smelly sneakers – we also enjoy more sterile community events to celebrate being Green. Watch for our “Shred it” events each year where we shred your personal documents for free so you don’t have to worry about identity theft.  When you’re cleaning out your closets, your office or your garage – pile up those sneakers next to those banker boxes full of old tax returns and bank statements.  Litchfield Bancorp will gladly help you be Green – and purge the stuff you really don’t need anymore!
